Основатель философии прагматизма: в своей статье "Как сделать наши мысли понятными" ["How to Make Our Ideas Clear"] (1878) он впервые ввел понятие "прагматизм" [pragmatism, иногда pragmaticism]. Доказывал, что мерой существования идей и верований являются их реальные следствия.
